Solid Crochet Square Baby Afghan

This afghan is approximately 24" across. You can continue with the basic pattern to make it larger. I found that it was necessary to switch to a smaller crochet hook on round 14, otherwise it was getting to full on the edges. The video will get you started for the first 5 rounds. I would recommend a simple reverse or backward single crochet edging.

Left Hand  Front Post Double Crochet - Video Tutorial

Purpose for Chain at the beginning of round - Many times I will use a chain at the beginning of the round. It will not count as a stitch.  I use it as a step up so I can work the full crochet stitch in place of the traditional chain.  I feel this technique has a neater appearance than working a chain.  You may use a chain 2 or 3 if you prefer using traditional crochet techniques.

Attach the slip knot to the crochet hook. Chain 4, join with the beginning chain.

Round 1:   chain, this will not count as a stitch, Work 16 double crochet through the loop. Join with the beginning stitch.  (16 stitches total)

Round 2:   This will be an increase round with double crochet and front post double crochet.

Continue around  from * to the beginning, SL ST-slip stitch to join with the beginning stitch.  (32 stitches total - 16 DC-double crochet, 16 FPDC-Front Post double crochet)  Cut the yarn and change color.

Round 3:  Attach the new color of yarn with a slip knot to the crochet hook.   Chain, this will not count as a stitch, work a double crochet in the same stitch, work 2 DC-Double crochet in the next stitch. *Work 1 DC-Double Crochet in the next stitch, work 2 DC-double crochet in the next stitch.  Continue around to the beginning from*, join with the beginning stitch. Cut the yarn and change color.  (48 Stitches total)

Round 4: Attach the first color of yarn with a slip knot to the crochet hook.  Attach the yarn normally and align even, to the stitch above the FPDC on Round 2.  Chain 1, work a SC-Single Crochet in the same stitch.  Work an elongated FPDC-Front Post Double Crochet around the FPDC on Round 2.  Chain 3, Skip 2 stitches, *work a SC- single crochet in the next stitch. Work an elongated FPDC-Front Post Double Crochet around the FPDC on Round 2. Chain 3, Skip 2 stitches, continue around from *, join with the beginning single crochet. (There will be a total of 16 chain 3 loops with a single crochet/elongated Front Post Double Crochet)

Round 5: SL ST-Slip Stitch in to the CH-chain 3 space. Chain 1, *work 3 DC-Double Crochet, CH-chain 2, 3 DC-Double Crochet in the same chain 3 space. This creates the corner point. Work 3 HDC-Half Double Crochet in the next chain 3. Work 3 SC-Single Crochet in the next CH-chain 3. Work 3 HDC-Half Double Crochet in the next chain 3. Complete 4 times total from * for each side.  Sl St-Slip Stitch to join with the beginning stitch.

You can stop at round 5 or continue with one more round.

Leaning Crochet Stitches and Squares - Crochet Tip #60

Have you noticed that the stitches in some squares may lean more than others? In this example, the stitches have a slight lean but it is not real noticeable. This is because the rounds of the square are worked in the same direction. Think about when you crochet a row of stitches when working a blanket. At each end you turn. The stitches will have a different look with crochet rows. To solve the stitch lean, you will turn on each round. This will produce more uniform stitches, that should stand taller and reduce the stitch lean.

Crochet is Repetition - Crochet Tip #49

Crochet is repeating stitches. It may be the same stitch or a series of various stitches.

Pattern Stitches are sets of stitches being repeated. A set of repeated stitches may include 1 row or several rows to complete the pattern stitch.

An Afghan with simple to intricate designs, is made up of sets of rows, that are repeated for the length of the afghan.

When making a Granny Square there will be 4 sets of repeated stitches on each round, since a granny has 4 sides.

When making a Doily, there will be sets of repeated stitches for each round. Some doilies may have an obvious flat side where others may be round, square or oval shape.

The Purpose of Increase Stitches - Crochet Tip #48

The purpose of adding increases or fullness evenly throughout your project, is to make your crochet piece get larger or lay flat.
  1. Granny Squares: the extra stitches are added in the corners. This will also form pointed corners
  2. Oval: the increases are added evenly around 2 ends
  3. Circle: the increases are evenly added around the whole piece
An increase stitch is usually two of your main pattern stitches worked in the same stitch on the previous round. Sometimes it can be three stitches. If your project has chains, adding more chains is another way to increase and make your piece expand in size so it will lay flat. An example of an increase would be to work 2 double crochet in the same stitch.
