Foundation Double Crochet

The foundation stitch is used as an alternative to the chain.  I recommend you work a small swatch with your pattern stitch to see if the foundation will work.  In most cases the foundation stitch should work. However for some lacy style stitches, the chain may be a better fit.

  • Attach a slip knot to the crochet hook. Take the loose end, wrap it over the main strand, now you have a loop.  Take the loop, wrap it over the main strand. Put your hook below the center strand, back up the opposite side.  This creates the slip knot.

  •  Work a chain 2, this will not count as the stitch.  It will be part of the first stitch.

  • Wrap the yarn over your hook once

  • Put the hook through the first chain

  • Wrap the yarn over your hook, pull through the loop. Pull through once. There will be 3 loops on the hook.

  • Wrap the yarn over your hook, pull through one loop. There will be three loops on your hook.

  • Wrap the yarn over your hook, pull through two loops. There will be two loops on your hook.

  • Wrap the yarn over your hook, pull through two loops.  There will be one loop on your hook to complete the first foundation double crochet.

***Repeat***
  • Wrap the yarn over your hook.  There are two loops at the opposite end.  Insert your hook below the two loops.

  • Wrap the yarn over, pull through the two loops.  You will have three loops on your hook.

  • Wrap the yarn over your hook, pull through one loop.  There will be three loops on the hook.

  • Wrap the yarn over your hook.  Pull through two loops. There will be two loops left on your hook.

  • Wrap the yarn over your hook.  Pull through two loops.  You have completed the foundation double crochet.  Repeat from ***Repeat*** for each stitch.

  • NOTE: As you are working the Foundation Stitch, it is falling vertical from the hook

  • Upon completion, the foundation stitch will be used horizontal
