Caleb's Crochet Hat Crochet Geek - Free Crochet Pattern

Caleb's Crochet Hat

Written by Teresa Richardson
 +CROCHET GEEK

Skill Level - Intermediate

Abbreviations
FPDC - Front Post Double Crochet
BPDC - Back Post Double Crochet
CH - Chain
SL ST - Slip Stitch

Materials
Size K/__ mm crochet hook
4 ply yarn
Tapestry Needle

Size estimate will fit a size 22 - 24 inch head, adult size.

You can work this with a smaller crochet hook.  If you use a size I or J, you may want to work 17 or 18 stitches to start, since the size of the hat will be smaller with the smaller crochet hook.

Chain 6 join.

Chain 1 for the step up on each round, this will not count as a stitch. Work the first back post double crochet around the chain one and the first stitch.

Round 1:  Work 15 double crochet through the chain, join with the beginning stitch. (15 stitch total)

Round 2: chain 1, BPDC, FPDC around each stitch. join with the beginning stitch. (30 stitches total)

Round 3: chain 1, BPDC, FPDC around each stitch. join with the beginning stitch. (60 stitches total) Cut yarn, Change color

Round 4-6: chain 1, BPDC,  FPDC,  join with the beginning stitch. Cut yarn, Change color

Round 7-9: chain 1, BPDC,  FPDC,  join with the beginning stitch. Cut yarn, Change color

Round 10-12: chain 1, BPDC,  FPDC,  join with the beginning stitch. Cut yarn, Change color

Round 13-15: chain 1, BPDC,  FPDC,  join with the beginning stitch. Cut yarn, Change color

Round 16-21: chain 1, BPDC,  FPDC,  join with the beginning stitch. Cut yarn, sew in all the tails.

I have found splitting the yarn to make knots is  a way to keep the tails hidden.  If you sew the tail in as a big strand, there is a risk that it may come out in the wash.  I will sew the tail in a little bit, split the yarn in the tail, sew or hook half of the strand over another strand, then make two knots.    Sew it in a little more, and repeat making knots.

7. SC in next single crochet and continue around.

Your hat will be in a continual round without stopping to join. Your contrasting marker will show you your beginning. Complete your hat to the length you want. Sew in tails.

*If you want your hat larger:1. Use a larger hook at the start or midway through your hat.2.Add an additional row of increases: (this would come after round 6) 5 SC in each of the next 5 SC, 2 SC in next SC,continue around, Do Not Join (70SC)

Attach a contrasting color to the beginning sc on round 4 or 5. This will make it easy to see the beginning. Once you have completed round 1-6 you can finish the hat in one round.
