Size H/5mm crochet hook
4 ply yarn
Tapestry Needle

Stitch Instructions and Definitions

Right Hand Version - Front Post Double Crochet - Wrap the yarn over your hook, insert the hook to the right of the post, between the stitches, around the back and through the opposite side between the stitches on the left side of the post. Wrap the yarn over, pull it through, complete the double crochet.


Left Hand Version - Front Post Double Crochet - Wrap the yarn over your hook, insert the hook to the left of the post, between the stitches, around the back and through the opposite side between the stitches on the right side of the post.. Wrap the yarn over, pull it through, complete the double crochet.



Chain 3, join.
Round 1:  Work 9 SC through the ring. Do not join. Work Continual round.
Round 2:  Work 2 SC in each stitch around. (18 single crochet total)
Round 3: Work 1 SC in each stitch around (18 single crochet total) Slip stitch in the next stitch to even off the round. Cut the yarn, pull through, give it a tug to secure. End here for a flat top cap. Continue with round 4-6 to make a stem for a pumpkin cap.

Round 4-6: 1 SC in each stitch around. Cut the yarn, pull through, give it a tug to secure.

We are skipping rounds 4-6 for a flat top cap.  The original pattern was made with a stem. Skipping rounds 4-6 will give the cap a flat top and match the video.  


Attach the new color of yarn with a slip stitch to any stitch.
Round 7: Ch 1, this will not count as a stitch, only the step up. Work 2 Double Crochet in each stitch around. Join with the beginning stitch.  (36 Double Crochet Total)


Round 8: Ch 1, this will not count as a stitch, only the step up to the next round.  *Work a FPDC in each of the next 2 stitches, work a HDC in the next stitch. Continue around from *.  Join with the beginning stitch upon completion of the round.   (36 Stitches Total)


Round 9: Ch 1, this will not count as a stitch, only the step up to the next round. *Work a FPDC in the next stitch.  Work 2 FPDC in the next stitch.  This is an increase. Work a HDC in the next stitch.  Continue around from *.  Join with the beginning stitch upon completion of the round.   (48 Stitches Total)


Round 10-15: Ch 1, this will not count as a stitch, only the step up to the next round. *Work a FPDC in each of the next 3 stitches, Work a HDC in the next stitch.   Continue around from *.  Join with the beginning stitch upon completion of the round.   (48 Stitches Total) By stopping at this point, the cap will be for an size estimate of 14-16 inches.

For the next larger cap, you will complete round 10 and then jump to round 11 under the medium cap.

Medium Size:  17-21 inches
Round 11: Ch 1, this will not count as a stitch, only the step up to the next round. 1 FPDC in each of next 3, 2 HDC in next stitch  - (60 stitches total)
Round 12: Ch 1, this will not count as a stitch, only the step up to the next round. 1 FPDC in each of next 3, 1 HDC in each of the next 2 stitches  - (60 stitches total)
Round 13- Continue for length:  Ch 1, this will not count as a stitch, only the step up to the next round. 1 FPDC in each of next 3, 1 HDC in each of the next 2 stitches  - (60 stitches total) You can stop at this round for a youth size cap estimated 17-21 inches.

For the next larger cap, you will complete round 11 and then jump to round 12 under the large cap.

Large Size: 22-24 inches
Round 12: Ch 1, this will not count as a stitch, only the step up to the next round. 1 FPDC around each of next 3, 1 HDC in each of the next 2 stitches Continue around from*. (60 stitches total)
Round 13: *2 FPDC around next stitch, 1 FPDC in each of next 2, 1 HDC in each of next 2. Continue around from* (72 stitches total)
Round 14-23: *Work 1 FPDC around each of the next 4, 1 HDC in each of next 2. Continue around from* (72 stitches total)

Earflaps
Row 1,3,5,7,9: Ch 1, this will not count as a stitch, only the step up to the next round.Work 1 FPDC around each of the next 4, 1 HDC in each of next 2. 1 FPDC around each of the next 4, 1 HDC in each of next 2, 1 FPDC around each of the next 4.

Row 2,4,6,8: Ch 1, this will not count as a stitch, only the step up to the next round. Work 1 BPDC around each of the next 4, 1 HDC in each of next 2. 1 BPDC around each of the next 4, 1 HDC in each of next 2, 1 BPDC around each of the next 4.

Row 10: Work 1SC, 1 SC DEC, 1 SC DEC, 1 SC, 1 SC DEC, 1 SC, 1 SC DEC.  Cut an extra length of yarn and gather the edge of the earflap. Knot and secure. 

At this point you can attach a braid or crochet chain to the earflap.


Cut the yarn and sew in the tail upon completion.
