Materials
Size I/5.5 mm crochet hook
4 ply yarn
Tapestry Needle

Chain 5, join

Round 1: CH 1, Work 10 HDC through the chain. We will be working the continual round.
Round 2: Work 1 SC, 1 HDC in the same stitch, Work 2 HDC in each stitch around. (20 HDC total)
Round 3: Work 1 HDC in the next stitch, work 2 HDC in the next stitch. (30 HDC total)
Round 4:  Work 1 HDC in each of the next 2 stitches, work 2 HDC in the next stitch. (40 HDC total)
Round 5: work 1 HDC in each of the next 3 stitches, work 2 HDC in the next stitch (50 HDC total)
Round 6-15: Work 1 HDC in each stitch around for the length.

Slip stitch in the next stitch or skip a stitch and slip stitch.  You may have a slight raised bump from working the continual round.  You can work a decorative edging to cover the final round.  I recommend the reverse single crochet.

Ear
Chain 5 Join
Round 1: Ch 1, Work 10 HDC through the chain, join.
Round 2: Chain 1, 2 HDC in each of the next 8 stitches. - 16 HDC total
Work a Reverse Single Crochet edging to the opposite side.

Sew the ears on between rounds 3-6.

Earflaps
Row 1: Work 1 HDC in each of the next 9 stitches (9 HDC total)
Row 2-5: Work 1 HDC in each stitch across.  (9 HDC total)
You can leave the earflap long or give it a rounded edge.
Skip a stitch, work a slip stitch all the way across.  Cut a little extra yarn, pull the yarn through and give a tug to secure.

Skip 10 stitch and attach the yarn for the earflap on the opposite side.  This will be the back opening between the earflaps.

Optional:  Yarn pom poms to attach to earflaps.

  1. Teresea, this hat is amazing. I would love to try it, but for my 8 month who has a big had for his age :) I would need the hat for 18,5 to 19 inches. Since I am a total beginner, I am not sure, how to increase the size? Do you have any suggestions? I would appreciate your help a lot! I already did the crochet ball from according to your video and it turned out great.

  2. I am having a little trouble understanding how to attach the ear flap. Can you explain? I have rewatched the video about 10x but it goes a little too fast for me to catch what I'm doing wrong.
    Thanks!!
