What was your first crochet project?

What was your very first Crochet Project?

Mine was a thread snowflake. I threw it away because everything was crooked and the stitches were uneven.  Later I made a shell baby afghan for my son.  The afghan helped me learn some stitch consistency in repeating the same stitch over and over.

I threw a lot of my first crochet projects away because I thought they were ugly. I regret doing that now and wish I would have saved some of them.  I was very hard on myself and felt that everything had to look perfect.  Back then as a "green crocheter", the perfection I was looking for came with a lot of practice. This gave me the stitch consistency making everything look even.

  1. I had a wonderful teacher (Mrs. Carmichael) for 5th and 6th grade (we're talking many decades ago). She would stay after school and teach kids how to crochet.
The first project she taught us was the bookworm. You know, the one with the curly top and pompom bottom? She then taught us bunny pins, shamrock pins and other simple patterns. She always brought the pattern all typed out and copied to hand to anyone who wanted one. She had patience and she cared. It was wonderful!

  2. The first was probably a dishcloth. Next came a pillow shaped like a cat - made entirely of granny squares! I was ridiculously proud of the ugly thing, heh heh.

  4. My first project was a dish cloth. The pattern was on the yarn packaging. I figured if it wasn't perfect it would still clean up messes just as well as if it was. I made a few dish clothes and have now moved on to trying a scarf - the shell scarf from your YouTube videos. I've only been crocheting for about 6 weeks. If the scarf doesn't turn out, I may give it to a local charity. Even if it is ugly, it will still keep somebody warm.

Thanks so much for your videos. I'm learning a lot.

  6. My first crochet project was a double stitch scarf. I was 8 and it was a class with 4H. God bless those adults who took kids into their homes to teach them a skill. I remember curling up in one of their living room chairs and just escaping to the great world of crochet. Just me, my yarn and my hook. I have no idea if I finished it or where that scarf got to but the memory is safely tucked away for a lifetime.

  8. My firt (completed) project was a Granny Square lap blanket when I was 9 years old. I gave it to my grandmother and she raved over how beautiful it was. My color choices and stitches were somewhat askew but she made me feel like I had created the most beautiful thing in the world. She's the reason I have my love for Crochet.

  11. My first crochet project was a scarf I was making for myself. My daughter saw it and wanted it. So I gave it to her. Just a simple dc scarf. I think I ripped out the whole project a time or two, but I got it finished!

  15. My first project was a single crochet scarf. I was glad that I started out easy. The scarf sucks but thanks to your videos I have been learning a lot more. I feel like with each project I learn something different. Luckily I learned how to read patterns and that opened up a lot more projects that I could do. I have only been crocheting for a couple of months now. You are pretty much the crocheting queen!

  18. My first project was a potholder. my grandma was teaching me. she started the first 3 rows and they were nice and pretty and LOOSE! then she gave it to me and i've noticed this with everything that i start brand new, my stitches were so tight! she told me to relax and that was hard! after i was done my pot holder looked more like a triangle than a square!

  19. My first project was your Rasta hat, in scrap yarn, yellow, navy, red and green. It's too big for me, so I'll donate it. Then I did your V stitch hat and scarf in some cotton boucle yarn that I don't like the feel of, so another donation. Then I made your beanie hat out of a red/purple blend, and I love it. Now in the process of making three baby hats for expected grand niece and nephews. Thanks so much for your videos - they are wonderful teaching tools.

  21. My first project is a doily. I followed the instruction from first crochet book. It looks not beautiful (the first is hard to be perfect!) but I always keep it and look at once in a while... hah hah.
Since I found your blog, I have learned a lot of techniques and skills. Now I can make many projects for my own. Thanks for all best things you are doing.

  22. My 1st crochet project was just recently. I made a beanie and it was not the best. It was way too small - toddler sized! But it was meant for an adult. It took me about 3 or 4 tries to finally get it done right. Now I'm getting tons of requests for a beanie and am on my 1st baby blanket project... a shell stitch =)

  24. My first crochet project was a scarf... I tried several different stitch patterns and lost stitches between rows so it wasn't straight or even at all. I ended up donating it... it was not pretty but it was warm :)

  25. I just taught myself the basic crochet stitches last week, so I've only completed 2 plain ordinary dish cloths. A friend recommended this blog, so I'm anxious to learn more.

  26. My first crochet project was a very wonky dishcloth which I still use. I made a few more after that and quickly moved on to amigurumi toys. :) me@salihan.com

  27. Making dishcloths are a good way to practice stitch consistency and try out different pattern stitch techniques. When you are first learning to crochet, the stitches are going to be lopsided.

  34. Mines was a boobie beanie. It came out so cute!! Once I did that I figured I could do anything. Your videos really helped me so much to learn all the names so I could crochet without a video. Now I can't stop crocheting. My husband is getting kinda annoyed but at least it keeps my stress low.
